Our elder housing village – watch it grow!
We are building! In June 2020, we officially "broke ground" for the new duplex elder cottage. Progress has been swift, and as of January 2022 the finishing touches are being installed. We are grateful for the community's support, and for our talented local builders and tradespeople! The committee is optimistic that the units will be ready for occupancy as soon as summer of this year.
If you would like to support housing security for elders on Lasqueti:
Together with the current Greene Cottage, we will soon be able to accommodate three households of Lasqueti singles or couples who need a comfortable and safe place to "age in place" in the heart of our community. We have a waiting list of Lasquetians who need this housing, let's finish it together! The duplex is fully wheelchair accessible, and designed to give its occupants a well-deserved rest from the hard work of off-grid homesteading. Off grid life means chopping firewood, hauling heavy supplies, maintaining complex water and electrical systems, rough trails and long muddy driveways, never-ending "do-it-yourself-ing". With advancing age and mobility-compromising medical conditions, leaving Lasqueti can seem the only option for some seniors. Our cottages offer a grass-roots alternative, built by locals for locals. Residency at the Judith Fisher offers a chance to remain in our beloved community, access support, and allow the engineering of the JFC micro-grid (providing electricity, heat, safe water) to make life easier. |

Thanks to a generous bequest honouring the Reverend Allan Greene, the first cottage was built in 2014. The current construction is largely funded by another amazing gift from a donor who wishes to remain anonymous. Our vision is to go further, adding to an increasingly vibrant mini-village where residents will enjoy a balance of neighbourliness and privacy, spaced around our lovely volunteer-maintained garden.
You can support this vision fast becoming a reality, with a one-time or recurring donation, a legacy gift, or a gift of property. A tribute gift in someone's name creates a lasting remembrance. All contributions are gratefully valued and receive a tax receipt.
