The Life and Legacy of Judith Fisher
The Judith Fisher Centre is named in grateful acknowledgement of the donation of the land on which this "castle-in-the-sky" project was built. Without this foundational donation, we would have remained in the "dreaming" stage far longer; perhaps forever.
This lovely, centrally-located piece of real estate now houses our health centre, elder cottages, service building (a simplified term for the highly engineered hub containing our self-generating power system, water filtration plant, wood-fired boiler, and more), the Lasqueti Internet Access Society, our beautiful flower gardens, and more. The land was given by the local Magic Mountain Land Cooperative, which was originally founded on a large bequest of land from the Fisher family, of whom Judith was the matriarch. She was by all accounts an extraordinary woman, and her life comprised the full range of human experience, from cosmopolitan jet-setting to simple rural subsistence, and from great joy to great tragedy. Below is a short biography of Judith, which now hangs in the JFC's main meeting and reception room, composed by her son, Lasqueti community "lifer" Laurence Fisher.
